Linux Mint team announced the new version of Linux Mint. The latest version Linux Mint 18 code named "Sarah" is a long term support release which will receive updates for next 5 years. Linux Mint 18 came in two editions "Cinnamon" and "MATE", features lots of improvements, enhanced update manager which allows to install different version of the Linux kernel, there are lots of package updates under the hood and Linux Mint 18 introduced X-Apps: "A new project called X-Apps was started and its goal is to produce generic applications for traditional GTK desktop environments. The idea behind this project is to replace applications which no longer integrate properly outside of a particular environment (this is the case for a growing number of GNOME applications) and to give our desktop environments the same set of core applications, so that each change, each new feature being developed, each little improvement made in one of them will benefit not just one environment, but all of them. The idea for X-Apps are: To use modern toolkits and technologies (GTK3 for HiDPI support, gsettings etc..); To use traditional user interfaces (titlebars, menubars); To work everywhere (to be generic, desktop-agnostic and distro-agnostic); To provide the functionality users already enjoy (or enjoyed in the past for distributions which already lost some functionality); To be backward-compatible (in order to work on as many distributions as possible)..." You can checkout release announcement Cinnamon and Mate.

Papirus suite is specifically designed for KDE desktop but now the icon theme is available for other desktops as well which includes: Unity, Gnome, Mate, Cinnamon and others. Previously we had a ported version of Papirus KDE icons in the PPA but now it is directly supported and maintained by creator. There are two variants in this icon pack with light and dark panel icons, it has more than 1000 icons for different applications and still counting, if you find any missing icon then directly report it creator via Github page. There is an official PPA but it only offers packages for Ubuntu 16.04 and 14.04, so we added these icons in our PPA where it is available for all current Ubuntu versions and its derivatives. Pitivi is a well known video editor, the initial release was back in May, 2004 and still in active development. It is an open source, non-linear video editor for Linux developed by various contributors from all over the world, licensed under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL). It aims to be a powerful and flexible video editor that can attract to prosumers and professionals.
In February, 2014 the project held a fundraising campaign through Gnome foundation, the goal was to raise €100,000 for further development. The fundraiser did not reach the goal but raised above €23,000 as of 2015, which allowed partially funded development.
It gives you access to hundreds of animated effects, transitions and filters. Not only do you have access to over 70 industry-standard transitions and more than a hundred video and audio effects, you can add true dynamism to your films by animating all the effects' properties over time with keyframes. Packed with time-saving features such as realtime trimming previews, ripple and roll editing, grouping and snapping, realtime assets management and searching, playhead-centric zooming and editing, non-modal cutting, detachable interface components, smooth scrolling, automatic zoom adjustment, Pitivi allows you to cut with ease. Latest MiniTube 2.5.2 Version Available for Ubuntu/Linux Mint

$

0
MiniTube is beautiful, lightweight and a native YouTube client. With MiniTube you can watch YouTube videos by typing keyword into the search-box and MiniTube will immediately loads the results. It offers two type of searches: channel search and keyword search. It provides endless video stream, playback on MiniTube is smooth and instant, without a noticeable buffering time, as I tested. Minitube does not require the Flash Player.
Minitube purpose is to provide TV-like experience to the user and not about cloning original YouTube web interface. It is not a playlist creator, so you can't use it to create your own flexible playlists. MiniTube makes it even easier to find YouTube videos you want to watch, and start watching them.
Video quality can be changed from the bottom right toggle switches 360p, 720p, and 1080p, and this is regardless of what quality options the video actually offers. Don't be surprised if you switch a video to 1080p and don't get the shiny result you expected: It's probably not available in that quality.

Features:

  • Minitube focuses on a pleasing overall experience, not on having tons of features. Anyway here's a list:
  • Channel subscriptions without using a YouTube account
  • Find missing parts of a multipart video
  • Sort videos by relevance, date, view count and rating
  • Filter videos by publication date, video duration and video quality
  • Choose the maximum video resolution up to 1080p
  • Editable playlist: drag'n'drop and remove videos
  • Search by keyword, channel name or paste a YouTube link. Suggestions while typing.
  • Spell suggestions: "Did you mean..."
  • Remembers recent keywords and channels. These can be cleared if needed.
  • YouTube feeds: “Most Popular”, “Featured”, etc.
  • YouTube categories: “Music”, “Games”, etc.
  • Related videos
  • Compact mode: a small, always-on-top window
  • Fullscreen mode: mouse cursor, toolbar and playlist autohide
  • Float on top
  • Stop after this video option
  • Copy YouTube link to clipboard
  • Share on Facebook, Twitter, Buffer and via email
  • Translated to more than 30 languages including German, French, Italian, Russian, Danish, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew and Chinese.

Changelog:

  • Upgraded to Qt 5
  • HiDPI support
  • Status Bar hidden when not needed: less clutter, more room for videos
  • Clickable links in video description
  • Autoadjust window size (Bye, useless black bars!)
  • Smart date formatting: 3 hours ago, 1 month ago, etc.
  • When opening the YouTube webpage the video now starts from where it left in Minitube
  • Fixed videos restarting after long pause
  • New and updated translations

Available for Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial/15.10 Wily/14.04 Trusty/Linux Mint 18/17/other related Ubuntu derivatives

Install Latest SMPlayer Release 16.7 With MPV Support For Ubuntu/Linux Mint Via PPA

$
0
0
SMPlayer is an open source and free multimedia player available for Linux and MS Windows, released under GNU General Public License. Unlike other players it doesn't require you to install codecs to play something because it carries its own all required codecs with itself. This is the first release which now support MPV and some other features such as MPRIS v2 Support, new theme, 3D stereo filter and more. It uses the award-winning MPlayer as playback engine which is capable of playing almost all known video and audio formats (avi, mkv, wmv, mp4, mpeg... see list).

One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave... don't worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume... SMPlayer can play Youtube videos and it also includes a handy tool which allows to search for YouTube videos. SMPlayer comes with several skins and icon themes, so you can easily change the look of the player. SMPlayer can search and download subtitles from opensubtitles.org. SMPlayer is available in more than 30 languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc..

List of Features:
  • Use MPV base instead of MPlayer.
  • Possibility to display two subtitles at once.
  • Play videos from video sites, like Youtube, DailyMotion, Vimeo, Vevo and many more.
  • SMPlayer has a better performance than the flashplayer in a web browser, specially in old PCs.
  • Support for MKV ordered chapters.
  • Precise seeking.
  • Native support for VAAPI and VDA. Improved VDPAU.
  • Better support for taking screenshots.
  • Complete preferences dialog, where you can change the key shortcuts, colors and fonts of the subtitles, and many more.
  • Filters. Many video and audio filters are available: deinterlace, postprocessing, denoise... and even a karaoke filter (voice removal).
  • Seeking by mouse wheel. You can use your mouse wheel to go forward or backward in the video. The mouse buttons can also be customized.
  • Video equalizer, allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma of the video image.
  • Multiple speed playback. You can play at 2X, 4X... and even in slow motion.
  • Audio and subtitles delay adjustment. Allows you to sync audio and subtitles.
  • Advanced options, such as selecting a demuxer or video & audio codecs.
  • Possibility to search and download subtitles from opensubtitles.org.
  • It can play YouTube videos. A YouTube browser is included.
  • Translations: currently SMPlayer is translated into more than 30 languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese....
  • Possibility to change the style and icon set of the interface.
  • Free and opensource. SMPlayer is released under the GPL license.

Changelog of this version:
  • Support for 2 in 1 computers with touch screens.
  • SMPlayer includes now a 'tablet mode', available in the menu Options. When the option is turned on it makes some changes in the interface so that it would be easier to control SMPlayer by touching the screen. When the user changes the tablet mode in the Windows 10 action center, SMPlayer will detect it and ask if it should switch to the SMPlayer's tablet mode as well.
  • Option to send video to an external screen.
  • Now it's possible to send the video to a second screen connected to the computer, while controlling the application in the computer's screen.
  • Support for high DPI screens.
  • On high DPI (dots per inch) screens SMPlayer looked very tiny. Now the interface is automatically scaled so it looks correctly. There are also settings in Preferences -> Interface -> High DPI where you can adjust manually the scale factor or turn off this feature.
  • Global shortcuts.
  • Now it's possible to use the media keys (play/pause, stop, volume+/-, etc.) as global shortcuts. That means that those keys will work even when SMPlayer is in the background. You can activate this option in Preferences -> Keyboard and mouse.
  • Settings are remembered for online streams too.
  • This means that, for example, SMPlayer can resume playback or set bookmarks on YouTube videos or other online streams (as long as they are seekable).
  • SMPlayer is now built with Qt 5 by default.

How to install SMplayer and MPV as base?

Note: Following PPA is only for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty/Linux Mint 17 users, other Ubuntu versions don't need to add this PPA. You can simply skip to SMPlayer install commands:
Install MPV in Ubuntu 14.04/Linux Mint 17.x via following PPA (For Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial/15.10 Wily users MPV is already available in the official repositories, so you don't need to add following PPA)

>> Available for Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial/15.10 Wily/14.04 Trusty/Ubuntu 12.04/Linux Mint 18/17.x/13 and other Ubuntu derivatives
To install SMPlayer in Ubuntu/Linux Mint open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

How to setup SMplayer to use MPV instead of MPlayer?

If you install MPV with SMplayer then it configure itself automatically to use MPV player as base. But still you can check it is using MPV or not.
To setup MPV as base for SMplayer head over to tool bar Under "Options" menu select "Preferences" then under "General" choose "mpv" as Multimedia engine, as shown in following screenshot.

Vivaldi 1.3 Web Browser Based On Chromium; For Power Users Only!

$
0
0
Vivaldi is fairly new web browser compare to other famous browsers, the initial release of Vivaldi was in January, 2015. It has improved a lot and evolved since the first release. Basically it is based on the open-source frameworks of Chromium, Blink and Google's V8 JavaScript engine and has a lot of great feature which I will table later.
Do we really need another browser? Since we already have a lot of them such as mostly used Firefox, Chrome, Opera and so on. The former CEO of Opera Software Jon Von Tetzchner didn't liked the direction of Opera Web Browser and said "Sadly, it is no longer serving its community of users and contributors - who helped build the browser in the first place." Then created a web browser which has to be fast, rich feature, highly flexible and puts the user first, so Vivaldi was born.

vivaldi

Vivaldi has some amazing features that other web browsers do not offer, lets see some of the key features.
Appearance: You can customize the look and feel of Vivaldi, you can change color scheme either you like light or dark version or change tab locations. It lets you manage them as you like and enjoy the browser.
