`VeraCrypt` An Alternative Encryption Tool to TrueCrypt

If you are sensitive about your digital data then you must know about Truecrypt(discontinued), a good utility which is no more available and not recommended to use because there are some security issues and won't be fixed. TrueCrypt was initially released as version 1.0 in February 2004, based on E4M (Encryption for the Masses). Several versions and many additional minor releases have been made since then, with the most current version being 7.1a, released 7th of February 2012. On 28th of May 2014, the TrueCrypt official website, began redirecting visitors to truecrypt.sourceforge.net and telling users to use BitLocker.
After end of life of Truecrypt, we see many forks of Truecrypt came as alternatives. Veracrypt is one of them and seems promising to continue development of the product. All issues have been addressed in Veracrypt which were found in Truecrypt and many others, since it is in development we see releases of Veracrypt from time to time, the most recent release of Veracrypt was on August 9th, 2015.
VeraCrypt is a free disk encryption software brought to you by IDRIX and based on TrueCrypt 7.1a. VeraCrypt picks up from where TrueCrypt left and it adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks. It adds enhanced security to the algorithms used for system and partitions encryption making it immune to new developments in brute-force attacks. It also solves many vulnerabilities and security issues found in TrueCrypt.
This enhanced security adds some delay ONLY to the opening of encrypted partitions without any performance impact to the application use phase. This is acceptable to the legitimate owner but it makes it much harder for an attacker to gain access to the encrypted data. VeraCrypt also solves many vulnerabilities and security issues found in TrueCrypt. It can load TrueCrypt volume and it offers the possibility to convert TrueCrypt containers and non-system partitions to VeraCrypt format.
You can get more detailed info about the Veracrypt on wikipedia

Veracrypt Ubuntu Linux

There is also an unofficial PPA available, which can be used in Ubuntu 15.04 Vivid/14.04 Trusty/Linux Mint 17.x/17/and other Ubuntu derivatives (This PPA is not even endorsed by authors of VeraCrypt).

Make your Gnome Shell Transparent and Better with Mist Theme [PPA]

There aren't much themes in development for Gnome Shell because every new release of Gnome Shell makes old theme highly incompatible and bit difficult for creators to manage their themes for newer version of Gnome Shell. But there are still some people who are working on Gnome Shell themes. Here is one of the theme called Mist, basically this theme is inspired by the appearance of the GDM3 login manager, the main goal of this theme is to make Gnome Shell fully transparent. This means a panel that blends right into the desktop, simple flat, transparent buttons, and the bare minimum when it comes to menus and elements that overlap the workspace. This theme is only compatible with Gnome Shell 3.14 and 3.16 versions, you need to enable user-themes extension in Gnome-Tweak-Tool to change Gnome Shell theme.

To install Mist Gnome Shell theme in Ubuntu 15.04/14.04/Linux Mint 17.x/17 open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

Do you like Windows 10 Look but Love LINUX? Here are Windows 10 GTK Themes for you!

Many people liked the Interface of Windows 10 because now it carries all those features which Linux already have from years. Do you like the look of Windows 10 but don't want to use it? Here we brought Windows 10 GTK themes for you, this theme offers two versions Light and Dark, you can use whatever you like. But hold on, now many people will say like 'why you are so obsessed by other operating systems and so, Linux is great OS', yeah I do agree that many geeks consider Linux above all operating systems. The superiority of the Linux shows that you can do whatever you like to do with your OS, change look/design and so, that's called freedom. We should appreciate new comers to Linux instead of letting them down, and people leave Linux because they think it is quite difficult to survive with this OS.

Mainly this theme is targeting new comers to Linux or the people who like the look of Windows 10, so please if you don't like it then don't use it. There are Windows 10 icons available on gnome-look but we can't share them because of proprietary license and copyright issue, since this theme is for GTK and designed by individual licensed under GPL, so there is no copyright issue. This theme works well under Cinnamon and Xfce Desktop environments as we tested, but it can work under other desktop environments too such as Unity, (Gnome has some issues with it but you can still try). You can use Unity Tweak ToolGnome-tweak-tool or Ubuntu-Tweak to change icons/themes.

MPV: An Open-Source Mplayer Based Video Player for Ubuntu/Linux Mint (PPA)

MPV video player is forked from mplayer2 and MPlayer, MPV supports wide variety of audio and video file formats. It offers some of the features with the former project while introducing many more. It is an command-line video player as well as offers GUI, it is lightweight and cross-platform available for Linux, Mac and Windows. From command line MPlayer's options parser was improved to behave more like other CLI programs, and many option names and semantics were reworked to make them more intuitive and memorable.
High quality video output: MPV has a OpenGL based video output that is capable of many features loved by videophiles, such as video scaling with popular high quality algorithms, color management, frame timing, interpolation, and more. While mpv has no official GUI, it has a small controller that is triggered by mouse movement. mpv leverages the FFmpeg hwaccel APIs to support VDPAU, VAAPI, DXVA2, VDA and VideoToolbox video decode acceleration. In addition, it features better pause handling, VDPAU improvements, support for modifier keys, correct color reproduction, better handling of audio and video synchronization, high quality subtitles, as well as support for playing multiple files at the same time. Another interesting feature of mpv is the ability to play video files a higher quality than many other open source multimedia player applications, simply because it relies on the FFmpeg’s hwaccel APIs (supporting VAAPI, VDA and VDPAU video decode acceleration).

As you may have noticed that there aren't much Gnome Shell themes in development now a days, this is because of quite fast development of Gnome Shell. But there are still some people who are working behind the scene to bring themes to make user experience much better with Gnome Shell. Aurora theme is kind of grayish color theme and it has two GTK versions one is complete gray and other one with dark title bar and there is only one Gnome Shell theme which is transparent. There are three versions of Aurora theme to support Gtk & Gnome Shell 3.12/3.14/3.16 versions, we've added all versions to PPA and version 3.12/3.14 available for Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty/Linux Mint 17.x/17 and Gtk & Gnome Shell version 3.14/3.16 available for Ubuntu 15.04/15.10 versions. This pack is works perfect under Gnome Shell and Cinnamon, and has some issues under other desktop environments such as Unity but you can still give it a try in other desktops. If you are using other distribution you can directly download theme and install it manually. You can use Gnome-tweak-tool to change icons/themes.

MiniTube is beautiful, lightweight and a native YouTube client. With MiniTube you can watch YouTube videos by typing keyword into the search-box and MiniTube will immediately loads the results. It offers two type of searches: channel search and keyword search. It provides endless video stream, playback on MiniTube is smooth and instant, without a noticeable buffering time, as I tested. Minitube does not require the Flash Player.
Minitube purpose is to provide TV-like experience to the user and not about cloning original YouTube web interface. It is not a playlist creator, so you can't use it to create your own flexible playlists. MiniTube makes it even easier to find YouTube videos you want to watch, and start watching them.
Video quality can be changed from the bottom right toggle switches 360p, 720p, and 1080p, and this is regardless of what quality options the video actually offers. Don't be surprised if you switch a video to 1080p and don't get the shiny result you expected: It's probably not available in that quality.

Features:

  • Minitube focuses on a pleasing overall experience, not on having tons of features. Anyway here's a list:
  • Channel subscriptions without using a YouTube account
  • Find missing parts of a multipart video
  • Sort videos by relevance, date, view count and rating
  • Filter videos by publication date, video duration and video quality
  • Choose the maximum video resolution up to 1080p
  • Editable playlist: drag'n'drop and remove videos
  • Search by keyword, channel name or paste a YouTube link. Suggestions while typing.
  • Spell suggestions: "Did you mean..."
  • Remembers recent keywords and channels. These can be cleared if needed.
  • YouTube feeds: “Most Popular”, “Featured”, etc.
  • YouTube categories: “Music”, “Games”, etc.
  • Related videos
  • Compact mode: a small, always-on-top window
  • Fullscreen mode: mouse cursor, toolbar and playlist autohide
  • Float on top
  • Stop after this video option
  • Copy YouTube link to clipboard
  • Share on Facebook, Twitter, Buffer and via email
  • Translated to more than 30 languages including German, French, Italian, Russian, Danish, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew and Chinese.

Changelog:

  • Upgraded to Qt 5
  • HiDPI support
  • Status Bar hidden when not needed: less clutter, more room for videos
  • Clickable links in video description
  • Autoadjust window size (Bye, useless black bars!)
  • Smart date formatting: 3 hours ago, 1 month ago, etc.
  • When opening the YouTube webpage the video now starts from where it left in Minitube
  • Fixed videos restarting after long pause
  • New and updated translations
