libreoffice

Release notes 4.2:
  • This release is bit-for-bit identical to the 4.2.0 Release Candidate 4, so you don't need to download or reinstall if you have that version already.
  • The distribution for Windows is an international build, so you can choose the user interface language that you prefer. Help content is available via an online service, or alternatively as a separate install.
  • Our Windows binaries are digitally signed by The Document Foundation.
  • For Windows users that have OpenOffice.org installed, we advise uninstalling that beforehand, because it registers the same file type associations.
  • If you run Linux, the GCJ Java variant has known issues with LibreOffice, we advise to e.g. use OpenJDK instead.
  • Some menu entries have changed or added. If you miss something, that may be due to the use of customised menu settings from your previous LibreOffice installation.
  • Bug fixes listed here.

New bold features:
  • Formula Engine: Round-trip interoperability with Microsoft OOXML, particularly for DOCX, as well as legacy RTF, has improved considerably. A new import filter for Abiword documents has been added.
  • A new engine for Calc - massive parallel calculations of formula cells using GPU via OpenCL are now possible thanks to our new formular interpreter.
  • Power and enterprise users on all platforms will like the new Expert Configuration window, which has been added to the Options tab.
  • New Start screen with a cleaner layout that makes better use of the available space - even on netbooks - and shows a preview of the last ODF documents.

WildGuppy automaticallly adjust the laptop's brightness, by using camera samples which is taken at a user definable interval. It allows to set brightness level from low '0' to maximum '100' from panel indicator, it can set minimum level e.g '20' and maximum level '70' which is completely depend on user choice. So camera will take samples once interval round is complete and it start interval again for next sample.
Panel indicator allows to set brightness level manually, whenever user choose this option then webcam won't take samples from webcam.
Another feature of this indicator is 'Feeling Lucky!', what it does is once user click on this option, at the same time it takes a sample from cam and set the right brightness level and stop sampling process.

Battery Consumption Test by developer:
"I see that lot of people are concerned about its battery consumption, so I did a small test that I left my laptop with Wildguppy on for 20 minutes and with Wildguppy off for exact same time. After first 20 minutes with Wildguppy on my battery level changed from 100% to 88%. Next 20 minutes with Wildguppy off my battery level went from 88% to 76%. Note that my battery is old, and it lost almost half of its capacity. But as I can see, in those two scenarios almost same amount of energy was wasted. You can test it and give your result below in the comment section!"

NitroShare is very handy application to send files from remote computer to any connected computer in the same network. Most of the time no necessary configuration required to send/receive files between computers using NitroShare. It is cross-platform available for Linux, Windows and Mac, which mean you can easily transfer files between two machines doesn't matter they're Windows/Mac or Windows/Linux or Linux/Mac. All network computers can immediately find each other and allows sharing.

NitroShare introduced the "share boxes", which are small widgets that stay on the desktop. Each share box represents different machine on the network, user can simply drag and drop file/folder on the widget to send it to the machine. It allows to create a share box that will ask which machine you want to send files.
The application integrates with the operating system, using application indicators on Ubuntu and the system tray on Windows. In Ubuntu, user can use its indicator to send file/folder to other machines.

Some other features:
  • Dynamic file compress during transfer to decrease transfer time and bandwidth
  • CRC checksum generation to ensure file integrity during transfer
  • Full compatibility with clients running on other operating systems
  • A helpful configuration wizard to guide you through setting up the application on your machines
  • The application was developed using the Qt framework and therefore runs on any platform supported by Qt, including Windows, Mac, and Linux.
You can also configure samba sharing between Linux and Windows.

Install MiniTube 2.1.6 YouTube Client in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty/13.10 Saucy/13.04 Raring/12.10 Quantal/12.04 Precise/Linux Mint 16/15/14/13/other Ubuntu derivatives

MiniTube is beautiful, lightweight and a native YouTube client. With MiniTube you can watch YouTube videos by typing keyword into the search-box and MiniTube will immediately loads the results. It offers two type of searches: channel search and keyword search. It provides endless video stream, playback on MiniTube is smooth and instant, without a noticeable buffering time, as I tested. Minitube does not require the Flash Player.
Minitube purpose is to provide TV-like experience to the user and not about cloning original YouTube web interface. It is not a playlist creator, so you can't use it to create your own flexible playlists. MiniTube makes it even easier to find YouTube videos you want to watch, and start watching them.
Video quality can be changed from the bottom right toggle switches 360p, 720p, and 1080p, and this is regardless of what quality options the video actually offers. Don't be surprised if you switch a video to 1080p and don't get the shiny result you expected: It's probably not available in that quality.
minitube

minitube

Features:
  • Minitube focuses on a pleasing overall experience, not on having tons of features. Anyway here's a list:
  • Channel subscriptions without using a YouTube account
  • Find missing parts of a multipart video
  • Sort videos by relevance, date, view count and rating
  • Filter videos by publication date, video duration and video quality
  • Choose the maximum video resolution up to 1080p
  • Editable playlist: drag'n'drop and remove videos
  • Search by keyword, channel name or paste a YouTube link. Suggestions while typing.
  • Spell suggestions: "Did you mean..."
  • Remembers recent keywords and channels. These can be cleared if needed.
  • YouTube feeds: “Most Popular”, “Featured”, etc.
  • YouTube categories: “Music”, “Games”, etc.
  • Related videos
  • Compact mode: a small, always-on-top window
  • Fullscreen mode: mouse cursor, toolbar and playlist autohide
  • Float on top
  • Stop after this video option
  • Copy YouTube link to clipboard
  • Share on Facebook, Twitter, Buffer and via email
  • Translated to more than 30 languages including German, French, Italian, Russian, Danish, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew and Chinese.

Nemo is a complete fork of Nautilus and its goal is to extend the Cinnamon user experience to desktop and file management. Nautilus has dropped type-ahead find search since 3.6 version and now using recursive search to find files/folders under current directory and sub-directories, most users don't like this behavior of Nautilus. Many of them started using other file managers instead of Nautilus.
If you already have Nemo installed or want to replace Nautilus with other File-Manager then Nemo can do a lot for you, install latest Nemo file manager from here.

After Nemo file manager installation, set Nemo as default File-Manager and allow desktop handling by Nemo open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

Protect Your Data by Encrypting Drives/Files using TrueCrypt, Install in Ubuntu/Linux Mint via PPA

Install TrueCrypt in Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy/13.04 Raring/12.10 Quantal/12.04 Precise/Linux Mint 16/15/14/13/other Ubuntu derivatives

TrueCrypt is an app that creates a virtual volume which is encrypted, and it allows user to keep private information safe. TrueCrypt for Ubuntu comes with the tray icon which displays on the panel. Installing the TrueCrypt isn't necessary on the system you can download from official site and use it as portable application but it is better to install under Linux if your system drives are encrypted with it.
It is user friendly program and very easy to use, just need little bit knowledge about file-systems and volumes. It offers two options to create encrypted standalone file which can contain many files depend on the size of encrypted file set by user, other option is to encrypt non-system drive so all data under this drive will be encrypted (Beware it will completely destroy your data if you have something on your drive).
For strong encryption use AES encryption with SHA-512 Hash algorithm and choose password which contains numbers, symbols, upper/lower case letters and should be 20+ character long.

Features of Truecrypt:
  • Entire partition encryption such as USB flash drive or HDD.
  • Virtual disk within a file and stores files in it like a read disk.
  • Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.
  • Parallelization and pipelining allow data to be read and written fast, as if the drive was not encrypted.
  • Provides plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password.
  • Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish.

Emerald is a window decorator that allows for a wide variety of new looks to be added to application windows. Emerald project is a window decorator that provides the borders to your windows normally provided by Metacity or KWin. It is not required for Compiz to operate, however it allows for decorations to be edited or even created from scratch. For now, there are plenty of existing Emerald themes that can be downloaded and used first.
Using Compiz and Emerald together can produce some genuinely stunning-looking desktop environments, although it is still possible to install and use them separately.
Emerald manager allows you to add themes easily by import option, first you need to download themes then import via Emerald Manager. I added theme pack to PPA which contains approx 35 themes and two other theme sets Avalon-Dark-Light, Hoverglass that looks really great if used with matching Gtk themes.

Unofficial Google Drive: Grive-Tools available for Ubuntu/Linux Mint/other Ubuntu derivatives [PPA]

Install Grive and Grive Tools in Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty/13.10 Saucy/13.04 Raring/12.10 Quantal/12.04 Precise/Linux Mint 16/15/14/13/other Ubuntu derivatives

Months back Pear OS developer created Syncdrive which was GUI for Grive, and its PPA was maintained by NoobsLab team. Unfortunately Pear OS has been sold and Syncdrive is no more supported, I received a lot of queries that it is not functioning anymore. So here is another unofficial great client for Google Drive, Grive command-line client was already available but the only thing 'GUI setup' was missing so thefanclub created Grive-Tools in order to made Grive setup easy for everybody. Basically it is front-end of Grive with some extended features. It has panel indicator and I tested it under these desktops: Unity, Mate, Gnome Classic, Lxde, and indicator doesn't work in other desktops Gnome Shell, Cinnamon, Xfce (I will report to maintainer).

Grive:
Grive is written in standard C++. Grive can be considered still beta quality. It simply downloads all the files in your Google Drive into the directory. After you make some changes to the local files, it will sync your changes back to your Google Drive. New files created locally or in Google Drive will be sync respectively. Deleted files will also be "removed". Currently Grive will NOT destroy any of your files: it will only move the files to a directory named .trash or put them in the Google Drive trash. You can always recover them.

Setup Screenshots

Features:
  • Grive Tools will assist in the installation and setup of Google Drive on your Ubuntu desktop.
  • Grive Tools consists of the following components:
    • Grive Setup - The main setup installation program to get started.
    • Grive Indicator - Application indicator for Google Drive.
  • A GUI installation will guide you through the the installation process and setup Google Drive in your home folder.
  • You will be able to access your Google Drive files locally* as well as synchronize your files with your Google Drive online. (* excluding Google Docs)
  • Auto Sync - Grive Tools keeps your Google Drive synchronized automatically by detecting changes in your local Google Drive folder. New files and folders will be uploaded to your Google Drive automatically after a few seconds.
  • The Grive Application Indicator supports both light and dark desktop themes.
  • On Screen notifications of Google Drive activity.

Grive-Tools official PPA doesn't support Ubuntu 12.04 precise, so I build and added Grive-Tools & Grive package in our PPA for Ubuntu 12.04 Precise/Mint 13 and its derivatives.

To install Grive & Grive-Tools in Ubuntu 14.04/13.10/13.04/12.10/Linux Mint 16/15/14 open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

After installation open Dash/menu and search for 'Grive Setup' to configure Google Drive account for Grive.

To install Grive & Grive-Tools in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise/Linux Mint 13 open Terminal (Press Ctrl+Alt+T) and copy the following commands in the Terminal:

After installation in Ubuntu 12.04/its derivatives open terminal and type grive-setup to configure Google Drive account for Grive.
